DEAS Context Data
Context data in DEAS Analyses
You’re interested in including (regional) context factors in your DEAS analyses? A great idea – because taking local conditions like unemployment rates, housing costs or social structure into account allows for more precise interpretation of your statistical findings.
Here is an overview of the additional data available for use with the DEAS – both in the Scientific Use File (SUF) and at the secure guest researcher workplace at the DZA in Berlin.
Available on request for use with the Scientific Use File (SUF)
Housing Cost Index (RWI)
The housing price index is based on data from Immoscout24 and provides regionalised rental and purchase prices at the district level (aggregated into quintiles). It is available for all SUFs from 2008 onwards.
Job-related Workplace Strain (2002 & 2008)
For the survey years 2002 and 2008, job-specific indices on physical, psychosocial and overall workplace strain are available. Based on ISCO-coded occupational information, these indices range from 1 to 10, indicating decile-based burden levels (source: Kroll 2011).
They refer to the respondent’s current or last occupation as well as to that of their (former) partner.
Access and Use
These datasets are available free of charge upon informal request to fdz@dza.de and can be directly linked to your SUF dataset.
Only available on site at the secure guest researcher workplace at the DZA
- INKAR indicators from the BBSR (e.g. unemployment rates, household income, physician density, adult education provision, divorce rates) – linkable at the district or municipality level
- Neighbourhood-level data from microm and infas360: Information on social milieus, purchasing power and age structure (microm: 2002, 2008, 2011, 2014 | infas360: 2014, 2017)
- Detailed housing cost indices (RWI): Available at district and municipality level, with differentiation by housing type (e.g. apartments vs. single-family homes); additional rental price index available.
- User-provided contextual data: If you have your own regional data at the district or municipality level, these can also be linked to the DEAS dataset in compliance with data protection regulations.
- Exact Date of Death: For a large proportion of deceased DEAS respondents, exact date of death information is available – exclusively on site.
